Colour Glossary

brightness

intensity or strength of colour


dye

a soluble colouring material which soaks into and bonds with the material it is applied to.


ink

a coloured liquid used for writing or a sticky paste used for printing.


pigment

an insoluble colouring material that can be mixed with water or oil and applied to a surface as a coating or paint


shade

a colour produced by mixing a pure colour with grey or black

 

colour

a quality of an object you can see, depending on the light reflected from it


fastness

a measure of how well a dye or pigment stays in the fabric, and does not fade with washing or in sunlight.


paint

a mixture of pigment with water, oil, etc. which can be used as a covering or for colouring or for making pictures on canvas, paper, etc


primary colour

3 colours which cannot be made from any other
paints and inks - magenta, cyan and yellow (as in a computer printer cartridge)

tone

a colour that slightly changes another on mixing, e.g.,
blue with a greenish tone
